LiveSeeding/Oper8 Farm Walk

Event Date : March 27, 2024

Event Time : 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Event Location : Kingsclere Estates Ltd, Pitt Hall Farm, Ramsdell, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG26 5RJ

Spring crop establishment, alternative weeding strategies and research trials

As part of the Oper8 project’s ‘demo days’ we are joining forces with LiveSeeding & Organic Arable for their series of farm walks to share alternative approaches for weed control.

Hosted by Tim May at Kingsclere, the main theme of the event will be spring crop establishment, competitive cultivars and weed management strategies. There is also an opportunity to look at winter crops heading into the spring, where much of the story for the season has already been determined.

A few headline topics that will be covered:

  • Drilling dates
  • Seed rates
  • Spatial arrangement (row spacings)
  • Strip till and inter row mowing
  • Varieties
  • Crop/weed dynamics
  • Weed communities
  • Mechanical weed control
  • Trace elements and microbial inoculants

Tim farms 880ha in Hampshire near Basingstoke, on mostly chalk loam soils. The typical rotation is four years diverse herbal leys followed by four years of cash cropping, having either a wheat or an oat focus. Tim has a mobile dairy on the farm which is as important as the arable enterprise. Although relatively new to organic farming, Tim is innovative and full of ideas and fresh perspectives. Come to Kingsclere on 27th March to find out more about Tim’s farm. To find out more about Tim, read his Agricology Farmer Profile here and his ORC organic conversion farmer profile here.
