Assessing the health of your soil

Event Date : December 2, 2016

GREATsoils Trial Demonstration at Valefresco, Old Pastures Farm, Hampton Lucy, Stratford Upon Avon, CV35 8BQ

The GREATsoils project is running six field trials this year which aim to compare different soil assessment methods in horticultural systems during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. The six growers from across the UK, ranging from Scotland to Kent, and from protected cropping systems, over field veg to top fruit orchards, are all interested in finding practical methods to assess, monitor and improve soil organic matter in their soils.

This day will concentrate on the first results from the trial hosted by Valefresco. The field trial compares different soil assessment methods in protected and field cropping systems, aiming to improve soil organic matter and soil biology, introducing green manures in protected cropping (spinach and rocket rotation) and to the field (lettuce rotation). The methods compared are NRM soil health test, visual soil assessment and earthworm counts.
