New Tree Fodder Technical Guide and Hub from Agricology

The historical and modern use of tree fodder as supplementary feed

Livestock farmers now have access to clear, evidence-backed information and real-world case studies exploring the role of tree fodder as a supplementary feed, with the release of Agricology’s Tree Fodder Technical Guide and accompanying online Hub.

Tree Fodder technical Guide cover and inside pages

A comprehensive Technical Guide designed for practical application

This free guide brings together peer-reviewed research and farmer experience to show how tree fodder can be successfully integrated into modern farming systems.

Written by Dr Lindsay Whistance (Principal Researcher in Animal Husbandry at the Organic Research Centre) and Janie Caldbeck, the guide provides in-depth insight into livestock browsing behaviour, nutritional and medicinal properties of tree fodder, and the potential impacts on animal health and welfare. It also offers practical guidance on establishing, managing, harvesting and feeding tree fodder, including methods such as pollarding, shredding, tree hay production and direct browsing.

Interactive Hub brings together additional learning resources

Alongside the Technical Guide, Agricology has launched a dedicated online Tree Fodder Hub. Designed as an interactive learning space, the Hub brings together a wide range of curated supporting materials, including farmer case studies, videos, research summaries and practical design tools.

The Hub enables users to explore the topic in greater depth. Covering everything from species selection to system planning and management techniques, it has been carefully designed to support farmers at all stages of their tree fodder journey.

Supporting a return to resilient, nature-based feeding systems

The use of tree fodder can support livestock health and resilience, reduce reliance on external inputs, and provide a valuable source of nutrition during periods of scarcity, such as drought or winter months.

As interest grows in regenerative and agroecological approaches to livestock husbandry, these new resources aim to support farmers in reintroducing and adapting this traditional practice for modern contexts.

The Tree Fodder Technical Guide and Tree Fodder Hub are freely available via the Agricology website.
