Dual Purpose Poultry Field Lab Webinar

Event Date : July 10, 2025

Event Time : 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Event Location : Online

In a new set of Innovative Farmers on-farm trials – the Dual Purpose Poultry field lab, six farms are working with welfare experts and researchers to assess the feasibility of dual-purpose breed poultry systems in the UK (i.e. bred for both eggs and meat). The triallists hope to gather information on the social and economic factors associated with a move away from specialisation in poultry farming, by monitoring their productivity, ability to thrive on diets using less imported high-protein feed, and welfare.

A key outcome of the field lab is to build a community of practice around dual-purpose breeds.

Join this Innovative Farmers field lab group to hear about the motivations and experiences farmers and researchers trialling dual purpose poultry.

Speakers and panellists:

In this webinar, we will be joined by the triallists and other members of the group, including:

  • Sam Packer, Soil Association – Field lab coordinator and Standards Innovations Manager
  • Dr. Annie Rayner, Planton Farm – Field lab researcher
  • Mike Mallett – Maple Farm, Kelsale, Suffolk – Triallist and mixed organic farmer

Points of discussion on dual purpose breeds:

  • Breed information and differences
  • Welfare and behaviour
  • Feed and diets
  • Marketing and consumer engagement

We encourage attendees to bring their questions to the panel through the Q&A, where there will be plenty of time for discussion.
