Composting for soil and crop health: Outcomes from the Feed the Soil project

Event Date : November 13, 2026

Event Time : 9:30 am - 3:30 pm

Event Location : The GREAT Project, Royal Agricultural University Stroud Road Cirencester GL7 6JS

The regenerative agriculture revolution and growing enthusiasm for farming practices that support healthy soils has fuelled an interest in using compost to build healthy soils and crops. There are a variety of approaches for making compost on-farm coupled with a myriad of ways to apply the products of composting to the land. The Organic Research Centre project Feed the Soil , made possible by funding sourced via The Progressive Farming Trust, aimed to dig into novel methods of compost production to provide guidance to farmers on the best way to process their organic wastes for soil and crop improvement on their own farms.

This event will showcase the findings of the Feed the Soil project and this event is run in collaboration with Climate Smart Advisors. It will introduce and discuss six different methods for making compost, highlighting the pros and cons of each method. Carbon emissions and costs of the different methods will be contrasted. Factors to consider when choosing a composting method will be discussed. Findings of the project will be presented alongside real-life experiences of farmers who are using composting to build soil health on their farms.
