Supermarket methods of sourcing and selling fresh produce are unsustainable and destined to become more so as peak oil makes itself felt. This is the headline conclusion Riverford Organic Vegetables draws from recent research, showing that supermarket organic produce is up to 73 per cent more expensive than the equivalent produce in a veggie box delivered free to your doorstep.
“This study of relative prices highlights the insanity of the way some supermarkets source and sell their veg,” says Guy Watson, founder of Riverford Organic Vegetables. “We need to look long and hard at whether multiple retailers really have all the answers to this country’s food supply.”
