This workshop, delivered through the EU Horizon ReForest project explored opportunities for silvopasture with objectives for shade, shelter, fruit/nut production, carbon storage and habitat creation at Gowbarrow Farm. The aim was to draw on farmer experience from the ReForest North of England Living Lab and discuss as a group the pros and cons of different planting patterns, funding opportunities, and steps to implementation. Sam and Claire Beaumont shared their ideas for a new agroforestry planting at Gowbarrow, setting the context of the farming system and wider landscape using maps and photos. The workshop set out to explore together opportunities for different spatial configurations (including alley/row planting, shelterbelts and living barns) and species mixtures, considering practicalities such as legislation, planting and management, as well as financing and funding opportunities, breaking down the initial steps to designing an agroforestry system.
