Alexa Varah, a PhD student with the Organic Research Centre and University of Reading, won a prize for her presentation at the SCI Bio-Resources Young Researchers conference at Reading on 3rd July 2012.
Alexa is in the second year of her PhD investigating ecosystem service delivery from UK agroforestry systems, funded by the ORC and Reading University. She is coming to the end of second busy field season collecting biodiversity and yield data from four organic agroforestry systems in England. Reporting on her findings from her first year of studies, Alexa presented evidence that showed agroforestry supports higher biodiversity compared to the agricultural control (see Alexa’s article in ORC Bulletin 108), and was awarded a prize for the best oral presentation.
