The importance of our local sheep breeds

How do we encourage people to value heritage breeds?

During the iSAGE project (Innovation for Sustainable Sheep and Goat Production in Europe) ORC carried out a small piece of research around local breeds.

As part of our local breeds programme iSAGE supported a Heritage breeds day run by the National Sheep Association (NSA). During the day we discussed local breeds and then we tasted a selection and confirmed what our predecessors knew, they are indeed delicious. The Heritage breeds scheme, championed by NSA seeks to sustain our breeds and offers an interesting marketing strategy whereby you can choose your dinner based upon its age, its breed and where in the country it hails from. The short video provides a lovely introduction to the Heritage Breeds ‘New tastes from old traditions’ initiative and further information is available from NSA.
