Sustain’s Bridging the Gap programme is demonstrating ways to enable people on a low income to access climate and nature friendly food. Food that is good for people and the planet is currently more expensive than food that is bad for health and produced in ways that damage the planet. For this reason, the programme is focused on the supply and affordability of organic fruit and vegetables to people who experience low income in cities. To do this, Sustain are piloting 10 supply chain interventions across the UK – some focusing on public procurement, and others targeting new approaches to retail. ORC , alongside researchers from the University of Portsmouth, have been tasked with an economic evaluation of the 10 Bridging the Gap Pilots as well as a Cost-Benefit-Analysis of the pilots to understand the potential benefits each pilot could deliver for the environment, the economy and the community.
