Episode 1: Background to the Organic Research Centre and the future of organics

This is the first in a series of podcasts which will be released to help celebrate our 40th anniversary throughout 2021. In this episode, Vicky Smith (ORC’s Communication Manager) speaks to Lucy MacLennan (ORC’s CEO) and Tim Bennett (Chair of the ORC’s Board of Trustees) about the history of the ORC, the future of organics and ORC’s role in this.

Episode 2: Meet members of our research team!

In this episode, Vicky Smith talks to ORC’s Head and Deputy Head of Research, Dr Will Simonson and Dr Ambrogio Costanzo. Vicky, Will and Ambrogio discuss what research areas the team cover day to day and what impact the ORC’s research has on the industry, as well as what the research team are working on at the moment and how they disseminate research outputs.

Episode 3: Elm Farm Research Centre & ORC – 40 years of pioneering organic research

Vicky is joined by Lawrence Woodward, ORC’s co-founder & first CEO, and Mark Measures, ORC Senior Advisor, to discuss the Elm Farm Research Centre and how it evolved into the ORC. Lawrence and Mark discuss how and why the Elm Farm Research Centre was setup, working alongside David Astor, as well as other pioneering initiatives that we created as a result.

Episode 4: Soil Analysis & Organic Advisory Service + Mark Measures’ Retirement

Vicky speaks to Mark Measures to find out more about the soil analysis service, the organic advisory service and IOTA. Vicky and Mark also talk about Mark’s time at the ORC over the last 40 years and his upcoming retirement.

Episode 5: Time to talk about Business and Cereal Markets within the organic sector!

In this episode, Vicky speaks to ORC’s Organic Business And Markets Researcher, Rowan Dumper-Pollard, and Andrew Trump, Managing Director at Organic Arable.

Vicky, Rowan and Andrew talk about how the ORC and Organic Arable work together and discuss projects including Living Mulch, AGROMIX, LIVESEED and LiveWheat, as well as discussing ways in which we can create a fairer supply chain and what the market opportunities are for the organic sector.

In this episode, Vicky speaks to Dr Charlotte Bickler and Katie Bliss about ORC’s approach to research and knowledge exchange.

Vicky, Charlotte and Katie discuss farmer led research, participatory approaches to working with farmers and the feedback loops between research and practice, as well as Agricology and other projects including DIVERSify and OK-Net Arable.
